The reigning champion of the Australian Open, also an 8-time record titleholder at the Melbourne Park, Novak Djokovic will face Russian 4th seed Daniil Medvedev in the Grand Slam final on Sunday. Medvedev, on Friday (February 19), crushed Greek 5th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2021 Australian Open semifinal to seal a final berth against the Serbian legend.
25-year-old Medvedev is ready for the ultimate battle against the defending champion at Melbourne Park and has already started his mental games with Djokovic ahead of their Australian Open decider on Sunday. According to the Russian, all the pressure of the final will be on the Serbian who has never lost a final at the Australian Open.
While Tsitsipas came back from a two-set deficit in the quarterfinal to beat Rafael Nadal, he was knocked out of the competition after a 6-4 6-2 7-5 crushing at the hands of Medvedev at the Rod Laver Arena.
“First of all, I like that I don’t have a lot of pressure because he never lost in eight times he was here in the finals,” Medvedev said in an on-court interview after his semifinal win on Friday.
“It’s he who has all the pressure, you know, getting to Roger, Rafa and the Grand Slams (record). So I just hope that I’m going to get out there, show my best tennis. As we see, I can win (against) some big names if I play good. That’s the main part. (Djokovic) has, for sure, more experience but more things to lose as well,” he added.
While Medvedev, a finalist in the 2019 US Open (won by Nadal), is yet to win a Grand Slam, Djokovic has 17 Grand Slam titles to his name and will be contesting for the 18th final win on Sunday.
