Radishes and turnips are similar-looking vegetables. But there are many ways in which these two are different from each other. One of the main differences between the two vegetables is that while radishes belong to the Raphanus genus, turnips belong to the Brassica genus.
There are also some differences in terms of the appearance of the two. Radishes are smaller in size than turnips and have a crimson skin colour, whereas turnips have white flesh. Have a look at some more differences between these two vegetables.
1. A major difference between these two vegetables is that turnip is a root vegetable. Whereas radish is a species of plant.
2. Radish has a crunchy texture and a sweet flavour, they become spicy as they grow old. Turnip, on the other hand, has a spicy and crispy flavour. Turnips are much milder in taste than radishes.
3. Radishes can be harvested in just 20-22 days and are thus a popular crop to grow. Turnips take much longer than radishes to mature. They take around 60 days to grow.
4. Radishes are mostly eaten raw and are used in a variety of salads. When cooked, the flavour of radish becomes much milder and they become soft and lose their crunch. Turnips, on the other hand, are often consumed in roasted form.
5. Turnips are packed with nutrients like calcium, vitamins A, E, C, B3, B5, and B6. They improve digestion, strengthens the bones and improves heart health. Radishes, on the other hand, are rich in fibre, antioxidants and calcium. They boost metabolism and strengthen the immune system.
